Things to do, booked by locals

All experiences

Guides first. Hosts ever since.

Chhobyang and Basudev worked as mountain guides before opening their first hotel in Dharamshala in 2008. That’s still how we plan trips: by people who have walked and driven these routes.

Why Himalayan Brothers

  1. Planned by former guides

Our founders started out guiding in the Himalaya. Routes, timings and rest days come from walking and driving them.

  2. Our own beds on the route

Buddha House in Dharamshala, Spiti Villa in Kaza and Diwan Sachpass in Bairagarh: you know where you sleep at altitude.

  3. Drivers who know the passes

Local drivers for Kunzum, Sach Pass and the Kinnaur road, with buffer days planned for landslides and snow.

  4. One number for the whole trip

Plan, change and get help on WhatsApp at +91 76500 90909 before and during your trip.

Before you plan

Can’t find your answer? Message us on WhatsApp (opens WhatsApp) and a local planner will reply.

Do I need a permit for Spiti Valley?

Indian citizens only need a valid photo ID. Foreign nationals need an Inner Line Permit for the Kinnaur stretch near the border, which is checked at Sumdo. We arrange it as part of your trip. Rules change, so we confirm them before you travel.

When is Sach Pass open?

Usually from late June or early July to mid-October, depending on the snow. September to mid-October often has the clearest weather and driest roads. We confirm the road status the evening before each crossing.

Which road into Spiti should I take?

The Shimla–Kinnaur road (about 420 km to Kaza) is open most of the year and climbs gradually, which is best for acclimatisation. The Manali road over Kunzum Pass (about 200 km) is shorter and more dramatic, but only open from June to mid-October. Our Spiti Circuit goes in through Kinnaur and out over Kunzum.

How does booking work?

Send one enquiry with your dates and how many of you are travelling. A local planner replies on WhatsApp, usually the same day, with an itinerary and a quote. There is no payment on this website: we confirm dates and price with you first.

Can you book hotels too?

Yes. We run five hotels: Buddha House, Quartz and Samdupling in Dharamshala, Spiti Villa in Kaza and Diwan Sachpass in Bairagarh. We add them to your trip, or you can book a room directly on hotelhimalayanbrothers.com. Along the routes we also book guesthouses and camps we trust.

What about altitude sickness?

On a Spiti trip you sleep at about 3,650 m in Kaza, so we climb slowly through Kinnaur and plan a rest day on arrival. Drink plenty of water, take it easy, and tell us about any health conditions when you enquire. If you feel unwell at altitude, tell your driver or guide straight away, and check with your doctor before you travel.

Tell us your dates. We’ll plan the rest.

Send one enquiry and get an itinerary, a quote and a local contact, usually the same day.
