# Manali to Kaza taxi via Kunzum Pass

Manali to Kaza over Kunzum Pass is about 200 km, a long day of 8–10 hours through the Atal Tunnel, Batal and Losar. The road is open only from about June to mid-October and is rough after Gramphu, so we send a high-clearance SUV with a driver who crosses Kunzum every season.

## On the way

1. **Atal Tunnel** (Into Lahaul): Under the Rohtang ridge, then down to the Chandra river.
2. **Gramphu to Batal** (Rough road): Unpaved stretches and stream crossings. Batal is the turn for Chandratal.
3. **Kunzum Pass** (~4,550 m): Prayer flags and a small temple at the top, then down into Spiti.
4. **Losar** (First village in Spiti): A tea stop and the first village after the pass.
5. **Kaza** (~3,650 m): Spiti’s main town. Our hotel, Spiti Villa, is near Key Monastery.

## Good to know

- **Altitude:** This road climbs fast, to about 4,550 m in a day. Rest on arrival in Kaza and drink plenty of water.
- **Start early:** Streams on the Batal stretch rise through the day, so we leave Manali at first light.
- **Stop at Chandratal:** Break the drive with a night at the camps near Chandratal, a short detour from Batal.

Usually from June to mid-October, once Kunzum Pass is cleared. Dates change every season, so we check the road before you travel.

**Can a sedan go from Manali to Kaza?**
