Dharamshala to Manali is about 240 km, usually 7–8 hours by road through Palampur, Baijnath, Mandi and the Kullu valley. The highway is open all year and a sedan is fine. We drive it one way, or as the first leg of a trip on to Spiti.

## On the way

1. **Palampur** (Tea country): Tea estates below the Dhauladhar, about an hour out of Dharamshala.
2. **Baijnath** (On the way): An old stone Shiva temple beside the highway. Bir is just off the road here.
3. **Mandi** (About halfway): A temple town on the Beas, and the usual lunch stop.
4. **Kullu valley** (Along the Beas): The road follows the river past orchards and rafting points.
5. **Manali** (~240 km): Drop at your hotel in Manali or Old Manali.

## Good to know

- **Fly at Bir on the way:** Bir Billing is just off this road. Add a tandem flight and we time the drive around it, weather permitting.
- **Monsoon:** From mid-June to mid-September landslides can slow the Mandi–Kullu stretch. We start early and keep the day loose.
- **On to Spiti:** From Manali, Kaza is a day away over Kunzum Pass (June to mid-October) in a high-clearance SUV.
